Liquorice
the healing properties of a root that also makes delicious sweets

Liquorice has been used for all kinds of medicinal purposes, and pregnant women in particular find it settles the stomach. Until the 1970s it was grown in fields in the Yorkshire town of Pontefract and there's still a sweet factory in the town today.

A book has just been published tracing the history of the healing root and Clare Jenkins has been sharing out her sweeties and sampling some liquorice bread.

by Briony Hudson and Richard Van Riel
available from Pontefract Museum in West Yorkshire
