Is smoking glamourous?01 April 2005
is smoking glamourous?
over 50 years after a link was first published between smoking and cancer, why are cigarettes still associated with glamour?

Later this year a new film Romance And Cigarettes will be released starring Kate Winslet. In the movie poster we see Kate lying on her back in a seductive pose holding a cigarette prominently in her hand.

What effect do such images have on women's perceptions of smoking? And should the government and schools be making more of an effort to stop cigarettes being seen as sexy and alluring?

James Walton, editor of the Faber Book Of Smoking and a smoker himself, and Deborah Arnott from the anti-smoking group ASH will be debating this.
