Sleepwalking21 March 2005
is it to be feared or is it a natural part of sleep?

An extreme result of sleepwalking was reported last week when a man was found not guilty of murdering his father because the jury believed he had been in an automaton state at the time of the attack and completely unaware of his actions.

Sleepwalking generally means a child wandering about at night, being put back to bed and then growing out of it during adolescence, but as many as 4% of adults continue to suffer. Some have walked into roads or even swimming pools.

Claudia Hammond, who's been known to go for a night-time walk herself, reports.
