Women in Europe16 March 2005

Opinion polls show that women are generally more sceptical than men about Europe

Next year the British people will face a referendum on whether or not to accept the new European Union Constitution.

Pro-Europeans argue that women in Britain have benefited from Europe, especially with extra rights for pregnant women, mothers, and working women.

Now women's rights campaigners are expressing concern that there may be a backlash against women’s rights in the European Parliament with the appointment of an anti-abortionist Anna Zaborska as chair of the Parliament’s women’s committee.

So to what extent has the European Union helped or hindered women’s lives? Jenni speaks to women on both sides of the debate.
