Poison garden17 March 2005
the first in the country

The Duchess of Northumberland has been granted permission to grow cannabis, magic mushrooms and opium poppies in her garden at Alnwick Castle. Along the borders will be strychnine, deadly nightshade and hemlock.

It's part of a poison garden, the first in the country, which opened to the public this month, and which will flourish under the watchful eye of the local drugs squad. The collection of plants is such that the garden has 24 hour security with some plants kept permanently behind bars.

Jill Hopkins met Jane, Duchess of Northumberland, and the keeper of poison plants, Alison Harmer.
