Serenades14 February 2005
An Italian wedding day tradition

Of all the countries in Europe, Italy undoubtedly has the reputation for being numero uno when it comes to romance and whether you’re in a gondola in Venice or at a cosy table-for-two in Sorrento, no romantic moment would be complete without a gentle serenade.

One of the cities which takes serenading most seriously is the capital itself, Rome. Serenading began there in the 1700s as a form of sung newspaper, but has now evolved into a pre-wedding day tradition and is deemed to be the most romantic expression of love and passion.

Over half of all brides are treated to a concert of typical Roman love songs with the groom waking his bride from under her balcony with songs professing his undying love. However it’s not always the groom who sings but a professional serenader.

Dany Mitzman investigates.
