In April 2002, Angela Cannings was wrongly convicted for the murder of her baby sons, seven-week-old Jason and 18-week-old Matthew. She had lost three children through cot deaths. Her conviction was based partly on flawed evidence from paediatrician Professor Roy Meadow who asserted that "One sudden infant death is a tragedy, two is suspicious and three is murder, unless proven otherwise."
She was sentenced to life imprisonment. After serving 18 months in prison, Angela Cannings’ conviction was quashed and she was freed by the Court of Appeal in December 2003. The case made legal history and prompted the Attorney General to set up a review of sudden infant death convictions.
