Compensation for war widow

She was the war widow who branded the Defence secretary a "disgrace" after the death of her husband in the Iraq war.

Steve Roberts was shot by friendly fire hours after being told to hand over his flak jacket to another soldier.

As the Ministry of Defence is set to finally admit liability, Martha talks to Samantha Roberts about the long and often lonely route to this victory.

An extract from the MoD's letter to Samantha Roberts

"Following the tragic death of Sgt Roberts on combat duties at a checkpoint in Iraq on 24 March 2003, the MoD has carefully considered the case for compensation for his widow, Mrs Roberts.

Following careful consideration of the case, the MoD has indicated to the lawyers representing Mrs Roberts that liability will be admitted. The value of the claim will now be calculated by Mrs Roberts’s lawyers and MoD officials. The MoD is confident that an amicable outcome will be achieved."
