Why are maternity services failing women?

The Royal College of Midwives says staffing figures may be slightly on the up but it's unlikely a government target of employing 2000 more midwives by 2006 will be achieved.

Over the years it has become harder to recruit and retain staff due to heavy workloads and stress. And new mums say the shortage of midwives left many feeling terrified, alone and in pain during labour.

Martha speaks to Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, reporter Rowan Pelling and Frances Day-Stirke from the Royal College of Midwives, and asks them why maternity services continue to fail women and what if anything is being done to turn this situation around?
