journey into old Delhi
In the middle of old Delhi, hidden behind a maze of little shops, are the remains of an eighteenth century palace that once belonged to The Begum Samru. She was a Muslim who married a soldier of fortune from Luxembourg and converted to Christianity.
After her husband's death she took over his estate and led his mercenary army into battle whenever she was called upon to defend it.
Thousands of pilgrims gather every year to celebrate her life in the village of Sardhana. Clare Jenkins went to Delhi to find out more about the warrior princess and her Palace.
