Victims' character17 January 2005
making things fairer for the victim in court

Mairi Ellis' son was stabbed to death but says that during the subsequent court case it felt as though it was her dead son - not the person who killed him - who was on trial.

The less sympathy a jury has for a murder victim the more likely they are to acquit the accused. The families of murder victims often complain that the description they hear in court is a gross parody of the person they love.

Jenni hears from Patsy Cullinan from Support from Murder and Manslaughter and asks Baroness Scotland, Minister of State for the Criminal Justice System, what can be done to make things fairer for the victim in court.
