Obesity & childbirth06 January 2005
Are mothers' lives at risk?

The so-called obesity epidemic is causing concern to health professionals and members of the general public alike. But for pregnant women it is particularly worrying.

New research from the Department of Health has found that a third of all women who die as a result of childbirth have been found to be obese - in fact it's the major cause of maternal death.

Jenni finds out from Kate Sallah, Director of Nursing for Birmingham and the Black Country Strategic Health Authority, and Professor James Drife what midwives and hospitals are doing about the problem.
