This week Doug Smith, the head of the Child Support Agency, resigned amid widespread criticism of the agency’s work. The agency has become notorious for what is described as chronic inefficiency and ineffectiveness.

When the CSA was set up ten years ago it was with the aim of helping some of Britain’s poorest families. So what’s gone wrong? And where does it go from here? 

The Parliamentary Select Committee which has been looking into how the agency functions recently visited Australia. Phil Mercer in Sydney visited Mandy Dunn, mother of two, to find out how it works for her...
