Economics of childcare18 May 2004
How important are childcare schemes in a successful economy?

No-one has quite come up with a scheme that would satisfy the childcare demands of the early women's movement - 24 hour creche and nursery for anyone who wanted it. But proposals are pouring out from all the political parties. This week, the government announced they may offer tax subsidies for nannies and after school clubs and the other parties are preparing their own plans.

Ed Crooks, Economics Editor for the Financial Times and father of two small children, and Lisa Harker, chair of the Daycare Trust discuss with Jenni the importance of childcare in a healthy economy and how all these schemes would be paid for.
