Do women use them to break out of their traditional roles?

Whether in Notting Hill or Rio, carnival is a time for abandonment. The name literally means farewell to meat and is the last days of excess before the fasting of Lent 

The Chichester Festival opened today with a carnival organised by artistic director, Ruth Mackenzie. Martha asks her whether historically carnival has been a time for women to break out from their traditional roles under the safety of disguise.
