Dr Alison Elliot13 May 2004

First ever woman Moderator of the Church of Scotland

Quite what the Great Protestant reformer, John Knox, who founded the Church of Scotland would have made of Alison Elliot, one can only imagine. He famously described the Queens of his day as a "Monstrous Regiment of Women" unfit to rule over their male counterparts. And some far flung conservative corners of the Kirk would probably still agree.

But Dr Elliot remains undaunted as she prepares to take on the role - an honorary one which she'll hold for the next year and which will involve a series of visits at home and abroad.

Alison Elliot talks to Sheila from Edinburgh .
