Iraqi abuse photographs10 May 2004
The portrayal of women as sexual aggressors

The pictures are inescapable, dominating the media in the row over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. Some of the photos show female soldiers laughing at naked male prisoners, who are forced to carry out degrading sexual acts.

Does the fact that some of the perpetrators are women change our reaction to the images? How are the images being interpreted in Iraq and the wider Muslim world? And why do the photographs remind us of pornography? Jenni talks to Islamic studies expert, Dr Nadje Al-Ali and to Dr Irene Gedalof, lecturer in Women's Studies at London Metropolitan University.
