Why are we so nostalgic about the war?
'Blonde Bombshells of 1943' is a play about an all-woman swing band formed during the war, loosely based on fact. It gets its premier at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. Despite the nightly blitz the women have a great time; and one of them looks back fondly to her war years.
So why are we so dewy-eyed about the war? Are women in particular, likely to look at it through a fond haze - after all it spelt untold freedom for many of them?
Jenni talks to playwright Alan Plater, 79-year-old saxophonist Kathy Stobart, who played at the famous Embassy Club in the 1940's and Penny Summerfield, Professor of History at the University of Manchester.
Blonde Bombshells of 1943 is at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 24 April to 22 May
