Thomas and Jane Carlyle30 Apr 2004
Were they the first celebrity couple?

Thomas and Jane's former home has just opened to the public for the season and this spring a classic biography, The Carlyles at Home, has been re-published.

Thomas is known for his weighty historical works, but his domestic life and his relationship with Jane have also provoked an enduring interest. Victoria Shepherd finds out about their marriage and speaks to Rosemary Ashton, author of Thomas and Jane Carlyle: Portrait of a Marriage.
