BBC - Radio 4 - Woman's Hour -Ballinasloe Horse Fair

There's an old Irish adage, 'Go East for a Woman. Go West for Horse' and every Autumn, those with a passion for all things equine journey to Ireland's far west to Ballinasloe town in County Galway.

Here the Great October Fair, the oldest and biggest horse fair in Europe, takes place tomorrow. Thousands of stallions, mares, foals and donkeys are bought and sold. There are no rules, no regulations and no forms to fill in and because it's a strictly cash business, deals are struck in the time-honoured way of a nod, a wink, a spit and a hand slap.
Clare Hampson joined the throng on the green at a previous fair to catch some of the women who trade.
