Mystery ShopperMonday 22 September 2003
Shop service is not what it was. If you can find a shop assistant at all they've 'only got what's out', and can barely be bothered to take your money. It's a joy and a surprise to find the occasional small specialist store where a shop assistant knows something about the product and takes the time to help you out.

The retailers must be aware that something is seriously wrong. Thousands of shoppers are now being employed by research firms to monitor performance.
They're called Mystery Shoppers and Debbie Hulme is one. She still can't believe she's being paid to shop. Lesley Hilton went to Manchester to meet her.
