And now we start a new series, working through the artist's paintbox looking at the origins of colour.
Ochre was the first coloured paint - it produces a yellow hue and exists naturally on every inhabited continent. But it is perhaps the aboriginal people in Australia who have been painting with it for the longest - somewhere around 40,000 years. Victoria Finlay is the author of a new book called Colour - and she took Jennifer Chevalier to the basement of the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London to look at the ochre used in aboriginal paintings.
