A Female Monarch for Japan?Wednesday 26 March 2003

For the first time in over two centuries, Japan is considering changing the law to allow a female monarch to reign, in the light of there being no male heir.

Kaori Shoji, social commentator in Japan, and Koko Kawanami, anthropologist & lecturer in religious studies, Lancaster University, look at the historical perspective of women in Japanese rule and discuss how significant this would be to the Japan of today.
