Gypsy Rose LeeTuesday 25 February 2003
Gypsy Rose Lee
For twenty years in the thirties and forties one woman dominated can show business. Gypsy Rose Lee was a stripper who became so famous as an actress, author and burlesque performer she's the stuff of theatrical legend.

The musical Gypsy, based on her life, is being rehearsed on Broadway at the moment by the British director Sam Mendez and opens in the spring. Her only son, Erik Lee Preminger, is now 55 and spent his young life travelling around with his mum.
Jo King from the London School of Striptease joins Jenni to talk about whether it would be possible for a woman to start her career as a stripper now and use it as a gimmick to go on to greater things?
'Gypsy and Me: At Home and on the Road With Gypsy Rose Lee' by Erik Lee Preminger, published by Little Brown & Co; ISBN: 0316717762
'Gypsy: A Memoir' by Gypsy Rose Lee, published by Frog Ltd (August 1999); ISBN: 1883319951

The Musical 'Gypsy' by Stephen Sondheim
