Diane AtkinsonTuesday 28 January 2003
We'll be delving into the grubby details of a bizarre Victorian marriage between the man of letters Arthur Munby and a burly servant girl, Hannah Cullwick. Munby was a dogged collector of facts and photographs about working women - and Hannah was his ideal specimen. Intelligent, articulate and most importantly, fascinated with dirt, Hannah enjoyed nothing more than rolling in the muck to please Munby.

Author Diane Atkinson, who has pieced together the couple's secretive 50-year partnership, joins Jenni to explain what it says about Victorian attitudes to class, dirt and marriage.
Diane Atkinson, 'Love and Dirt: The Marriage of Arthur Munby and Hannah Cullwick' Publ. by Pan/MacMillan, Hardcover, 256 pgs., ISBN: 033378071X
