Amalfi LemonsMonday 2 September 2002
Though the fruit of the citrus medica is thought have originated in India, these days we associate the lemon with the Mediterranean and particularly Italy.

Frescoes depicting the fruit were found in Pompeii and there's also a mosaic pavement at Frascati from the 100 AD.
The queen of all lemons is widely reckoned to be the Amalfi Lemon. A specific variety called the sfusato, grown on rocky terraces clinging to this amazing hillside south of Naples.
Simon Parkes visited Amalfi to discover the various uses and convoluted history of the fruit.
