The wedding cake, after the dress, to which it often bears a marked resemblance, is traditionally the centre piece of the whole event.

It's cutting is supposed to signify the first joint action of the bride and groom. The top tier should be kept for the christening, and the crumbs put under the pillows of maidens who hope to dream of a future husband.
