This week Cherie Blair was at the centre of controversy for hosting political seminars at Downing Street. One commentator even likened her to Caligula's horse who was made a consul by the emperor.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of it all, it certainly raised questions about the role of a partner to the leader.
Martha asks Kirsty Lang, BBC4's chief correspondent, and biographer Brenda Maddox how they do it in other countries.
