Female suicide bombersSaturday 2 February 2002
There has been a great deal of speculation this week over why a young Palestinian woman blew herself to pieces in a crowded part of Jerusalem, killing an Israeli man and wounding many others.

The suicide bomber was Wafa Idrees, a Palestinian refugee, who worked as a volunteer for the Red Crescent, tending to those injured in the intifada.
Dr Fadia Faqir is Director of the Centre for Middle Eastern Women's Studies at Durham University. Martha asks her whether this is a new departure for Palestinian militant groups.
