Dame Gilliam Beer is Professor of English at Cambridge University. She's writing a study of the island as it appears in both literary and scientific writing.
But she has also given a lecture to the Royal Institution entitled 'Experimental Islands' in which she examines how the concept of the island has influenced political thinking. Jenni talks to Gillian Beer about the impact of Darwin's islands.
