Janet BananaFriday 1 February 2002
In October 2000 Janet Banana arrived in Heathrow from Zimbabwe requesting asylum. She and her 18 year old daughter are just 2 of 106 Zimbabweans seeking political asylum in this country. However, Janet's case is slightly different because she's the wife of former President of Zimbabwe, Canaan Banana.

Her position in Zimbabwe became untenable when her husband was imprisoned for sodomy by Robert Mugabe's regime. Now, the woman who attended Charles and Diana's wedding as an honoured guest, lives on benefits in a tiny flat in London.
With the elections in Zimbabwe looming, she talks to Martha about what the future holds for her.
