Afghanistan's Women's MinisterSaturday 19 January 2002
Dr Sima Samar has been appointed Minister in charge of women's affairs by the new government of Afghanistan. She is the first women to occupy such a senior post.

During the Russian occupation of the country, her husband was arrested and she never saw him again. She later fled the country and has not returned for 17 years.
She speaks to Martha Kearney from Kabul and explains that one of her first problems is finding an office to work in.
