Following a referendum in East Timor almost two years ago when the East Timorese voted for independence, Indonesian militia groups ran riot.
Over six hundred people were killed in the violence, homes were burned to the ground and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee to West Timor.
In the aftermath Indonesia handed control of the territory to the United Nations and now, two years on, the East Timorese are preparing to go to the polls again - this time to vote for an assembly which will draw up their constitution.
Chloe Arnold reports on what will become the world's newest state and the part that women have played in the country's struggle for freedom.
