London Bridge is falling down
The first in our series on nursery rhymes examines "London Bridge is falling down", a song dating from a time early in history. Its numerous European parallels persuaded even the usually sceptical researchers that this is one of the few nursery rhymes which may have a genuine basis in antique ritual, since a direct translation is unlikely. Chris Roberts, author of “Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme”, and Morag Styles, an expert in Children's Literature and its history, unveil a rather dark link between the famous bridge, women and children. | |
