Emily Tinnie was a woman who loved to shop - from the time she was married in 1910 until just before the second world war she amassed a huge collection of dresses, coats, hats and shoes, but she hardly ever wore any of them. Instead they were lovingly stored in wardrobes and tea chests, often left with the tag still on. When she died it took her daughter Dr Alexine Tinnie nearly forty years to sort out her mother’s things. Mrs Tinnie’s wardrobe went on display at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery as part of the exhibition ‘A Passion for Fashion’. Seventy four thousand people came to see it – making it the most successful exhibition in the Walker’s history. Plans are now underway to dust off the Tinnie collection once more, and to display it in other parts of the city. Reporter, Judy Merry met Pauline Rushton, curator of the exhibition and Dr Tinnie.
