The influential blues singer
August 10 1920 is a landmark date in the history of blues music, the date when Mamie Smith recorded Crazy Blues, which sold a million copies in one year alone. Mamie Smith paved the way for the perhaps more famous women blues singers who followed her. She is one of the most influential of the iconic black women singers collected on the record label, Document Records. Judi Herman talks to Buzzy Jackson, author of 'A Bad Woman feeling Good - Blues and the Women who sing them'’ and Adam Gussow, Associate Professor English and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi. She also speaks to Gill and Gary Atkinson, the husband and wife team behind Document Records. | |
