A recent report by the National Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction Audit, claims that fewer than half of patients were offered the chance to have reconstructive surgery immediately after a mastectomy. Mr Robert Carpenter, Clinical Lead for Breast Cancer at UCH London says that, in general, not enough focus is given to the appearance of breasts after surgery and that a deformed breast should not be an acceptable result of treatment. He argues that prevention of deformity and immediate reconstruction should be the way forward. But many patients don’t know this is an option and not all breast surgeons are able to carry out these procedures. To discuss what is on offer and how awareness can be raised, Jenni is joined by Robert Carpenter and one of his patients, Henrietta Lovell, as well as Tara Beaumont, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care.
