Health
Menstruation17 June 2009
Discovery of genetic factors that influence start of menarche.

Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, along with other research institutions across Europe and the United States, have for the first time, identified two areas of the human genome that appear to influence the age when menstruation starts. The findings of the study could have ramifications for normal human growth and weight too, because it was found that early-age menstruation is associated with shorter stature and increased body weight. Jenni talks to Dr Anna Murray, Lecturer in Genetics at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter about the findings.
