This weekend, Radio 3 marks Mendelssohn's anniversary with a series of special programmes and concerts. One of the documentaries puts the composer's music into context when film maker and writer Sheila Hayman explores the identity of her great, great, great, great uncle in his lifetime and after his death, the effect of Wagner’s anti-semitic polemic on his reputation and the banning of Mendelssohn's music by the Nazis. She joins Jenni to talk about the great man and about the consequences of Mendelssohn’s mixed identity on subsequent generations of the family.
Mendelssohn, the Nazis and Me [presented by Sheila Hayman] is broadcast on Radio 3 on Sunday, 9th May [2100 – 2145].
Sheila’s film [also called 'Mendelssohn, the Nazis and Me’] will be broadcast on BBC 4 on June 19th.
