The exotic plants at Kew

Orchids are plants unlike any other. Hundreds of explorers have died in pursuit of them. For years orchid specialists at Kew Gardens have been using its archives to identify orchids, evaluate their rarity and catalogue plants from different parts of the world. To mark Kew’s 250th anniversary, a new display called Tropical Extravaganza has just opened which features thousands of orchids and tropical flowers in the Princess of Wales conservatory. Charlotte Njeru spoke to Dr David Roberts – an orchid botanist at Kew – as well as some of the flowers’ admirers. As you can hear she had to dodge the water sprays that are used to keep the humidity up.
