Researchers from the US have found that a variant in the gene on the X chromosome could be associated with an increase risk of Alzheimer’s disease in women. This is the first gender linked susceptibility gene to be found for late onset Alzheimer’s disease. At present, the cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, but it is likely that a mixture of environmental and genetic factors is involved. Jenni talks to Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust about the findings and the latest developments in the field.
