Getting rape on the civil liberties agenda

Jill Saward, victim of the Ealing Vicarage rape, gave up her life-long right to anonymity to talk openly about her experiences. She now campaigns for improvements in conviction rates and better support for rape victims. She has decided to stand in the by-election in Haltemprice and Howden triggered by the resignation of David Davis MP over what he calls the “erosion of British liberties”. For Jill, sexual violence is something that affects thousands of people – mainly women – and she is prepared to defend the gains of CCTV and the DNA database in protecting the liberties of victims. Jane speaks to Jill about why she’s standing and why she believes now is the time for a debate.
