Hajar began her adult life in bondage and became the Prophet Abraham’s Egyptian concubine. Revered by contemporary Islamic feminists today as the symbolic mother of Islam, and the archetypal ‘single mother’, the writer and scholar Asra Nomani tells her story to reporter Angela Robson.
