The Continuing Relevance of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY)27th June 2007
The FANY centenary badge
As the FANY celebrates its centenary, we look at its role in WWI, WWII and beyond

They parachuted behind enemy lines; ran hospitals by battlefields; and drove into mortal danger: the achievements of the women of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY), particularly in the Second World War, have been widely celebrated. On Woman’s Hour over the last few weeks we’ve heard the stories of some of those women. The volunteer corps continues to exist, taking on crucial roles in times of crisis such as the July 2005 London bombings. As the FANY celebrates its centenary, Commandant Lynda Rose and Kate Adie join Jenni to talk about its extraordinary past and continuing significance.
