History
Husbands of Queens25 June 2007
The Duke of Edinburgh
They are not always kings. So what is their role?

On this day 150 years ago, Queen Victoria made Albert her Prince Consort – the first time the title had been used. Her decision brought Albert’s role into focus; and indeed the question of what role husbands of queens actually do play has been a thorny issue throughout the centuries. If the queen rules as a king would do, then is her husband king? If not, what is his title, how does he fill his days, and is he happy with the situation? Jane Little is joined by historian Alison Weir the author of Innocent Traitor, a novel about Lady Jane Gray.
