Women prefer clothes that are specifically made for them and yet – until recently – they have had to make do with replacement knee joints that are simply smaller versions of the male knee. Now an American company has anatomically mapped the female body and is in the process of re-designing replacement joints appropriate for women. The first of these is for the knee and the next in development is for the hip.
Jane talks to Howard Ware - Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Chase Farm and the Wellington Hospital - the first surgeon in this country to implant gender specific knee joints and discusses the latest innovations in replacement joint design with Professor Andrew Carr, Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Oxford.
