How long before the male of the human species are redundant?
Scientists have recently discovered that female hammerhead sharks can reproduce without the aid of a male, and that mice can – under particular circumstances - be created with two mothers and no father. As scientists in America make artificial sperm out of stem cells, we’ll be asking Ann McLaren, Professor of Physiology at the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge University and Anna Smajdor, medical ethicist at Imperial College, London, how long it will be before a 'fatherless' human child is born. Or do these prospects only hit the headlines because of fears that women might in the future not need men?
