There are currently two major productions of restoration comedies running in London, George Etheridge’s ‘Man of Mode’ at the National Theatre and Thomas Otway’s ‘The Soldier’s Fortune’ at the Young Vic. Next month sees the revival of one of the most famous plays of the period, William Congreve’s ‘The Way of the World’ at the Theatre Royal, Northampton.
With the restoration of the monarchy and the return of King Charles II, women were allowed on the stage for the first time. Judi Herman has been looking at the female actors of this period and at the wide range of characters written for them. She spoke to some of the actors and directors involved in the current productions and to Gilli Bush-Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway College, London. | |
