Murano Glass04 Dec 2006
For centuries the ancient art of glassblowing was one of the best kept secrets of Venice with the glassmakers confined to the nearby island of Murano. These days fewer local people are going into the trade and it is possible that the art form may die out. However, one of the oldest glassmaking families in the lagoon, the Baroviers, has given its support to a school dedicated to keeping alive the craftsmanship of the famous glassblowers of the past. Lara Corner went to talk to established glass designers, but first was taken around the school by Silvana Gubetti, the education and workshop coordinator. They started with the furnaces, the so-called ‘hot shop’.
