Nicaraguan Abortion Law13 Nov 2006
The Nicaraguan National Assembly voted last month to ban all abortions, even where the mother’s life is at risk. With the bill likely to become law by the end of this month, Jenni is joined by Dr Sarah Bradshaw, Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at Middlesex University and Ana Quiros from the Autonomous Women’s Movement which works for women’s rights in Nicaragua. They discuss the effect the new bill will have on the lives of Nicaraguan women and why abortion has become a central issue in the campaign for Nicaragua’s presidential elections, which last week saw former Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega returned to power.
